Veterans Day 2024

Veterans Day 2024: A Day to Honor Those Who Served

About Veterans Day

Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, is a federal holiday in the United States that honors all who served in the United States Armed Forces. It is celebrated on November 11th, the anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I in 1918.

History

The origins of Veterans Day can be traced back to the end of World War I. On November 11, 1918, an armistice was signed between the Allies and Germany, ending the war. The following year, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as Armistice Day, a day to commemorate the end of the war and to honor those who had served.

In 1954, Congress passed a bill changing the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day, in order to honor all veterans, regardless of the war in which they served. The bill was signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on May 26, 1954.

Traditions

Veterans Day is a day to show appreciation for the service and sacrifice of all veterans. There are many ways to celebrate Veterans Day, including:

  • Attending a Veterans Day parade or ceremony
  • Visiting a Veterans Affairs hospital or nursing home
  • Sending a thank you card to a veteran

Veterans Day is a time to remember the sacrifices that our veterans have made for our country, and to express our gratitude for their service.
